Orlistat weight loss efficacy A randomized controlled trial was conducted to investigate the efficacy of diet and exercise interventions in the treatment of patients with abdominal obesity, defined as a body mass index (BMI) > or = 30 kg/m2. This trial was conducted at two hospitals in Southern California. A total of 468 obese men/women (BMI <30) were enrolled. Subjects randomly assigned to 1 of 3 groups. The first group (n = 122) was assigned to an experimental group and prescribed a lifestyle modification that involved total of 13 behavioral changes. The intervention group also followed a weight reduction program (n = 124), but it did not include a diet component. The third group (n = 113) was assigned to a control group (n = 114) and prescribed a lifestyle modification that did not include a lifestyle modification. The control group did not follow a treatment program. All subjects attended 5 group sessions a week and did regular activity. In addition, after an initial baseline evaluation, subjects who did not respond to behavioral or diet counseling were instructed to lose 5% of their weight. At the end of 2-year intervention, experimental group had significantly greater decreases in body weight (-4.8 vs. -2.5 kg) compared to the control group (-0.7 vs. 0.2 kg). These results indicate that behavioral counseling is a safe and effective adjunct to dietary counseling for the treatment of obese patients with abdominal obesity. INTRODUCTION Weight cycling is common in both men and women, it occurs at a rate of 3–5% the population every year. 1 This can be categorized into short-term cycles involving weight loss of 3–10% initial body weight, lasting 1–8 weeks, or long-term cycles involving weight gain of at least 10–20% initial body weight and lasting 4–12 weeks. Long-term weight cycling is the most severe condition with potential for long-term morbidity. 2-3 Although a variety of lifestyle modification methods have been evaluated for weight management, none is widely accepted and has been tested in clinical trials. Some of these methods include reduced food intake or physical activity as a form of weight loss, self-monitoring calorie intake and physical activity, weight loss surgery. However, no method of weight management has been shown to be completely efficacious with regard to achieving long-term weight reductions. Many clinicians are hesitant to prescribe lifestyle modification interventions, because there is widespread disagreement about what types of exercise are most effective for increasing physical activity and weight loss.4-6 A few randomized controlled trials have compared different types of exercise with calorie restriction, but none has compared different types of activities with or without weight loss.     Tip of the Week : Bending Steel = Increased Strength Endurance

    Each week we publish a number of tips and techniques via Twitter, the blog; and the newsletter. Wherever you are, there’s always a way to improve what you’re doing.
    A friend of mine asked me over the weekend why I bend things. It’s partly because it’s fun, and partly, well, I’ll let Adam explain.
    There are many great reasons for bending things, as Unbreakable‘ Adam Glass notes in the article Why Bend Steel? Apart from the simple ‘because it’s downright fun‘ :
    The increase in strength and power naturally will carry over to an increase in your endurance. Anyone who has bent a nail will tell you the first time they bent it was so tiring. I have watched people sweat bullets bending their first respectable nail. As time goes on you gain huge reserves of power. A personal testament to this level of power for me was October 2007 when I bent 150 60D nails in one hour using the double under (DU) grip. That represented a massive improvement from Jan 2007, when bending 10-15 nails left my hands extremely fatigued.
    Good stuff.

    Unlock Your Hips, Unlock Your Squat I get a lot of questions regarding the impact of ‘unlocking your hips‘ on heavy squatting. Rick Kaselj goes into it in plenty of detail in the ‘Unlock Your Hip Flexors‘ program; and I’ve also posted a brief video below which demonstrates/explains some of the exercises.
