I’m constantly amazed at just how much my training is influenced by the people on this site. Whether you’re looking for a new piece of equipment, an unusual exercise variation or just an idea of how others approach things, you’ll enjoy these :

What’s been going on this week? Quite a lot actually.
Over to you. I’d love to hear what you think : leave your comments on the above articles, and share them with your friends/colleagues/clients and so on.
NB : If you’re keen to do more writing in 2014 and would like to submit your own piece for Straight to the Bar, here’s how.
Video : San Francisco Phonebook Tearing
A spot of phonebook tearing goodness. Nice one.
Gymchat 237 – Old-Time Strongman Training (Logan Christopher)
Old-Time Strongman Training – Phonebook Tearing, Frying Pan Rolling, Kettlebell Juggling and a whole lot more. Love it.
They’re certainly uncommon areas: how do you train for them? What are the benefits of these approaches? What sorts of equipment is involved?
This week we’ll be discussing the entire field of Old-Time Strength in obsessive detail. Joining us is ‘Physical Culture Renaissance Man‘ Logan Christopher, together with Personal Trainer (and Strength Athlete) Josh Hewett. Fantastic.
If you’ve got questions/comments for Logan or Josh, just swing by the event page for this Gymchat. And if you’d like to point your friends/colleagues to the discussion, just use the ‘share‘ button at the top of that page. The more the merrier.
Who : ‘Physical Culture Renaissance Man‘ Logan Christopher, joined by Personal Trainer (and Strength Athlete) Josh Hewett
Topic : Old-Time Strongman Training
When : Wednesday Feb 26, 9:00pm EDT (the Event page shows what time that is in your local timezone).
How : Watch the live stream, and ask questions, directly on the Event page. We’ll also post the full video shortly after the Gymchat.
See you there.
Previously : In Gymchat 236 we discussed Programming for Strength vs Programming for Hypertrophy (with Strength Coach Jason Paris and Personal Trainer (and Strength Athlete) Josh Hewett). Great conversation.
If you missed the live stream (or just want to go over a particular point again), you can watch the entire video here.
Tip of the Week: Using (and Making) a Fat Bar
Each week we publish a number of tips and techniques via Twitter, Google+, the blog; and now the newsletter. Wherever you are, there’s always a way to improve what you’re doing.
This tip comes to us from the obscenely strong Max Shank, in the form of a video from the article The Fat Bar. Take a look.
This video shows the bar in action. To read how it helps, and how to make one; head over to the article The Fat Bar. Nice one.

Checking Out : Intervention – Course Corrections for the Athlete and Trainer
Words of wisdom from Dan John. Fantastic.
When chatting with someone this morning I realised that although I’d been fortunate enough to see the DVD version (thanks Laree!) of Dan John‘s Intervention seminars a couple of years ago, I’d never read the book. And believe me, it’s well worth having.
To give you an idea, here’s a short clip from the DVD that’ll help explain what ‘Intervention‘ is all about :
Dan John’s ‘Intervention‘. Fantastic.
Quick update on the Hip Thruster we mentioned recently – fantastic thing.
Rather than trying to explain how it works, here it is in action :
Good stuff Bret, looks great.
